Description
This is a rubble-walled churchyard, closely associated with Kells Parish Church. The majority of the gravestones date from the earlier 18th century and are of good quality, demonstrating considerable sculptural detail. Several are recorded in the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) inventory. These include two dated 1706 and 1707, which feature representations of the Temptation of Adam and Eve. A stone commemorating John Murray, dated 1777, includes a more anecdotal pictorial element depicting a gun, a powder-flask, a grouse, a hunting dog, and a fishing rod, all representing the deceased man’s lifestyle, situated below an epitaph.
