Description
8 Janet Street in Thurso is an early 19th-century townhouse that stands two stories tall and features a wide three-bay design. The front is made of tooled ashlar with polished ashlar dressings and rusticated quoins on the outer bays, while the flanks are constructed from rubble. The building has painted ashlar margins and a door piece, with a slightly recessed center bay and ground floor windows. The entrance is rounded-headed and includes a fanlight, flanked by blind occuli and sidelights. The outer first-floor windows have narrow blind sidelights and cill courses. There is a 12-pane window in the northeast gable, along with a bracketed eaves cornice and corniced end stacks. The roof is covered with slate. At the rear, there is a single-storey lean-to range and a contemporary single-storey, five-bay pilastered wing attached to the southwest gable, which includes three windows and one door, with a parapet masking the slate roof. This addition is considered a sensitive enhancement to the rear of the property.
