Description
Ballone Castle is a mid to late 16th century Z-plan castle featuring a square tower to the southwest and a circular drum-tower to the northeast. The castle has four storeys and is currently roofless, constructed from rubble with ashlar dressings, and retains some remnants of harling. The ground floor includes a round-headed entrance that is simply chamfered and located within a re-entrant. There are depressed corbelled bartizans at the southwest and southeast angles, as well as corbelled stair turrets at the northwest and northeast angles. A four-bay single storey vaulted wing projects south from the northeast drum-tower. The castle also features rectangular splayed gun-loops, small round shot-holes, and a small round-headed inlet for fresh water located at the rear.
