Description
The Tarbat Free Church of Scotland, located in Portmahomack, was built by Maitland and Sons between 1892 and 1893. This Gothic-style church features a front made of coursed dressed rubble, with rubble flanks and tooled dressings. The symmetrical gabled east front is flanked by projecting bowed gallery stair wings. At the center is a projecting gabled porch that has a pointed, moulded doorway and small nookshafts. Above the porch are two windows with geometric tracery, which are linked by a continuous hood-mould. The design includes angle pilasters that terminate in cylindrical pinnacles, a small apex wheel window, and a finialled bellcote above. The six-bay flanks are adorned with narrow pointed-headed lancets. At the rear, there is a vestry wing centered on the west gable. The church has a slate roof featuring triangular louvred vents and a tiled ridge crest. Inside, the church has a galleried interior.
