Description
Inchdrewer Castle is a compact three-storey L-plan tower house dating from around 1500, with alterations and additions made in the late 16th century and a wing added in the late 18th century. The castle was restored in 1971 and is situated on a commanding site. It is constructed of rubble with tooled ashlar dressings.
The south elevation features a round-headed doorway, while a similar but narrower doorway is located in the west re-entrant angle, below a squinch that supports an angle stair tower. These doorways replace a blocked narrow entrance that was previously located on the first floor, flanking the stair turret in the west re-entrant. A circular stair turret rises at the east, leading up to a corbelled crenellated wallhead. There are three small angle turrets that rise from either the first or second floor level, with the one on the west supported by a squinch.
To the east, there is a plain two-storey, two-bay gabled wing that projects from the main structure. A long first-floor window in the south elevation lights the hall, while the remaining windows, except for those in the 18th-century wing, are small and irregular, featuring renewed timber multi-pane glazing. The west gable has an enlarged single window, and there are two similar windows in the north elevation, all of which were fitted with circa 1971 plate glass glazing to light the former first-floor hall.
Ruinous rubble walls extend from the south elevation, flanking a former courtyard to the east, which housed the former kitchen with a mural slop sink. The principal entrance likely opened from the south courtyard, flanked by round-headed towers, remnants of which still exist. There is also a small round-headed postern gate in the west of the barmkin wall, complete with a draw-bar hole and draw-bar, and the entrance is protected by a diminutive gun loop.
