Description

Alvah Manse is a 2-storey, 3-bay manse built in 1764 and enlarged and remodelled in 1870. It features a single storey and attic service wing at the rear. The exterior is harled, with Turriff sandstone ashlar margins, a band course, blocking courses, and finials, along with gablet copings.

On the east elevation, the central bay is slightly advanced and gabled, with steps leading to the door that has a strip fanlight and a bracketed cornice at ground level. The first floor has a window with a moulded cill course that continues as a stepped string course to the flanking bays. There is an ashlar, battlemented blocking course (parapet) and a gablehead featuring a blind bulls-eye and finial. The ground floor has canted windows flanking the entrance, each with a moulded cornice and a battlemented blocking course. The first floor windows break the eaves in gabled dormerheads, each topped with finials.

The south gable has two blinded windows on each floor, while the north side has a single window on each floor. The rear wing is at right angles and includes a gabled dormerhead, with an additional wing in the re-entrant angle. The windows throughout are sash and case with a 4-pane glazing pattern. The building features ashlar coped skews with gablet skewputts and corniced stacks.

The garden is enclosed by an ashlar coped, harled boundary wall, and there are square ashlar, corniced gatepiers to the south, which support wrought- and cast-iron gates.
