Description

The Bank of Scotland on Tower Street in Tain was designed by George Angus in 1845 and showcases a Classical architectural style. The building is constructed from tooled ashlar with polished ashlar dressings, while the rear features rubble wings. It stands two storeys high with three bays, and there is a near contemporary single storey, two bay wing on the west gable. Notable architectural details include a pilastered doorpiece, moulded architraved windows, and two blind 12-pane windows on the first floor of the west gable. A band course separates the ground and first floors, complemented by deep moulded eaves and panelled gable stacks. The roofs are finished with piended slate. The property is enclosed by a low coped rubble retaining wall topped with cast-iron spearhead railings, and there are two pairs of square ashlar gate piers with pyramidal caps, along with a high rubble garden wall.
