Former Town Hall, Tower Street, Tain

The former Town Hall on Tower Street in Tain was designed by Andrew Maitland and Sons and built between 1874 and 1876. This Renaissance-style building features a two-storey façade made of ashlar stone, with a prominent gable front facing Tower Street. The entrance is recessed and located at the top of a flight of steps, sheltered by a convex columned and arched arcade that supports a balcony. Above the entrance is a large round arched opening, flanked by narrow side bays that have windows set in recessed panels on the ground floor. The ground floor windows are mullioned and transomed, while the first-floor windows feature circular tracery under hoodmoulds, all set beneath an arcaded gable. The building is adorned with pinnacles and a central niche. On the west elevation, there are five round-headed two-light mullion and transom windows, which are also set in oblong recessed panels. The roof is covered with slate and topped with tiled cresting.
