Description

Ravelston House, located at 994 Great Western Road in Glasgow, is a villa designed by architect John Gordon around 1875, featuring classic polished ashlar. In 1910, H O Tarbolton made additions in a Tudor style.

The original villa is two storeys high with an attic and basement, presenting a three-bay elevation. Steps lead up to a painted ashlar tripartite doorpiece with a fanlight, flanked by sidelights and a door featuring small pane glazing. The steps have a solid parapet, and above the door is a single sash window.

On either side of the door, there are full-height square projecting windows with pilastered mullions and a continuous entablature, all with plate glass sashes. A continuous cornice runs above the ground floor, and the eaves are detailed with timber mutules. The roof features a centrally placed bow dormer, flanked by tall corniced axial stacks, all covered with slate. The east flank and rear are finished in stugged ashlar.

To the west and rear, Tarbolton's full-height additions include an oratory with traceried bipartite lancets facing east, nursery accommodation, and additional service quarters. The polished ashlar front elevation has a full-height canted window on the left and bipartite windows on the right, all with mullioned and transomed small pane leaded glazing. The stugged ashlar rear includes a canted entrance projection on the left.

The interior of the house has been largely altered. There is a low coped boundary wall with tall square ashlar gatepiers to the east.
