Description

56 Cleveden Drive is a symmetrical villa designed by architect John Gordon around 1887. The building features two storeys, an attic, and basements, constructed of polished ashlar with vermiculated rusticated quoins at the ground floor. The north facade has a taller central bay that rises to the attic storey, flanked by full-height four-light canted windows and bipartite windows, all of which are architraved, mullioned, and transomed, with plate glass sashes.

A continuous moulded band course runs over the basement, ground floor, and at the first-floor cills and lintels. The villa has bracketted eaves, slate roofs, and box dormers, with some roof brattishing. The polished ashlar flanks feature transomed sashes. On the west side, there are steps leading to a single-storey pilastered porch with a dentil cornice and a deep plain parapet. The porch has an architraved double-leaf outer door and a vestibule door with glazed and leaded panels. A tripartite window on the west side contains figurative leaded glass. The rear elevation has a rock-faced basement and is detailed similarly to the north elevation, with bay windows flanking tripartite windows.

Inside, the interior has been generally much altered, but some plaster cornices remain. The drawing room features a good gilded timber-lined ceiling, and there is good stained glass in the porch and a cupola in the attic billiard room.
