Description

Cleveden House, located at 5 Cleveden Road in Kelvinside, Glasgow, is a Renaissance-style villa designed by architect John Gordon around 1877. The building features two storeys and a basement, with a prominent three-storey tower on the south side.

The exterior is constructed of polished ashlar stone, channelled at the ground level and accented with rusticated quoins. The east elevation has three bays and includes a wide single-storey porch that advances from the main structure. Access to the porch is via steps with a balustraded and scrolled parapet leading to an architraved doorway, which contains a double-leaf panelled door. A four-light window is situated to the east of the porch, which has rounded angles and is topped with a dentil cornice and a blocking course.

All windows on the building are architraved bipartites with sash windows featuring plate glass glazing. A continuous dentil cornice runs above the ground floor, with cill strings at the first floor and strings at the eaves. The deep timber eaves are bracketted, and the roofs are piended slate with tall corniced axial stacks, some adorned with lotus cans.

The north elevation mirrors the detailing of the east side, featuring a single-storey central curved projecting window with a bipartite window above it. Flanking this window are cartouches with portrait heads, and wallhead stacks that also have incised lotus cans.

The south elevation is finished in droved ashlar and includes two low two-storey service wings connected by a keystoned arched gateway leading to a glazed kitchen court.

On the west elevation, a polished ashlar bay on the left features full-height bow windows, while the rest of the rear elevation is constructed of stugged ashlar and is largely obscured by a large two-storey modern brick addition.

Inside, the house boasts an acid-etched vestibule door and a hall with paired marbled colonnettes that support an elaborate coved coffered plasterwork ceiling. Most rooms feature rich ceiling and cornice plasterwork, along with carved timber doorcases. An imperial staircase is highlighted by elaborate cast-iron balusters.

The property is enclosed by a low ashlar boundary wall, which includes a pair of square corniced ashlar gatepiers.
