Description

Amalfi House, located at 58 Cleveden Drive in Glasgow, is a villa built around 1880 with classical architectural details, and it features an additional rear wing added in 1898 by J L Cowan. The exterior is constructed of polished ashlar with rusticated quoins.

The villa is two storeys tall and has three irregular bays. The left bay contains a canted window, while the right bay features a five-light semi-circular window on both the ground and first floors. Between these windows is a door that is framed by a porch supported by paired Corinthian columns and a balustrade. The west elevation showcases a full-height semi-circular bay with five-light windows on each storey, and there is a two-storey canted bay at the rear. The windows are plate glass sash and case, and the eaves are deeply bracketed.

The original single-storey rear wing has been raised by two additional storeys, creating a link to a three-storey rear block. This rear block is made of stugged ashlar and features a projecting and part corbelled stack that rises through the apex of a two-bay gabled section on the south elevation, along with corniced stacks.

The property is enclosed by a low coped ashlar wall that has a pair of tall square ashlar gatepiers. Inside, the villa boasts a richly fitted interior in a Renaissance style. The hall includes a Corinthian columned screen, a ribbed plaster ceiling, and architraved doorpieces topped with mannered pediments. The staircase rises from the centre of the hall landing and has a dog leg that ascends along the right wall. The principal rooms feature plaster cornices and geometric ceiling designs, with the drawing room showcasing a bold serpentine design that incorporates two semi-circular bays. On the first floor, original library fittings are preserved in the front northwest room, while the rear southwest room, likely the billiard room, has a coved ribbed ceiling supported by Corinthian pilasters and a deep moulded frieze.
