Description
This building at 1012 Great Western Road in Glasgow is a classically detailed villa constructed in 1893. It features two stories, an attic, and a basement, all finished in polished ashlar stone that has been cleaned. The symmetrical facade facing Great Western Road has three bays.
Access to the villa is via steps that lead to a centrally placed porch supported by paired Doric columns. The porch is corniced and has a balustrade. The entrance includes a round-arched doorpiece with pilastered reveals and a glazed semi-circular fanlight, flanked by pairs of Doric pilasters. The vestibule door is tripartite, featuring glazed side lights and fanlights.
On either side of the porch, there are full-height, five-light square projecting windows with moulded cill bands and cornices at the ground level. Above the porch, there are two single-light architraved windows. The villa has sash windows with plate glass glazing, a string course at the eaves, and a plain main cornice. The die and baluster parapet features timber-framed dormers behind it, and the slate roofs have axial corniced stacks.
The east flank of the villa has three bays, with an advanced two-storey square projecting window on the left and bipartite windows on the right. The west flank also has three bays, featuring a two-storey five-light bow window on the right and a canted window on the left. Both flanks are detailed similarly to the main facade and have tall corniced wallhead stacks. The dormers vary in shape, mostly being bipartite with triangular pediments.
The rear elevation is finished in stugged ashlar and includes a large tripartite leaded and coloured glass stair window. To the left, there is an extensive two-storey domestic wing. The front garden is enclosed by a low coped ashlar wall, which features a pair of tall square corniced ashlar gatepiers with cast-iron lamp brackets.
