Description
This is a substantial Italianate villa with associated garage and outbuildings, constructed in 1877 under the direction of architect James Boucher. The villa is situated on Great Western Road, Kelvinside, Glasgow and stands two storeys high, with an attic and basement, spanning seven bays, featuring a more prominent central bay.
The exterior is faced in polished ashlar, which has been stonecleaned. The ground floor is rusticated, with flat voussoirs above the windows. Wide, rusticated pilasters rise from the ground level at the corners, while paired Ionic pilasters are present on the first floor. Steps extend outward from the basement to a distyle, fluted Ionic porch, which is distinguished by a carved metope frieze panel and a die and baluster parapet. The architraved doorpiece is round-arched, housing a double-leaf panelled door. The vestibule door is tripartite, with acid-etched glazing. The first-floor windows are architraved with consoled pediments, and the bays are divided by Ionic pilasters. The advanced central bay exhibits a tripartite window with a segmental pediment above the centre light, featuring a carved tympanum, flanked by pairs of Ionic pilasters. Sash windows are fitted with plate glass. There is a continuous fretwork frieze to the cornice above the ground floor, a continuous cill band to the first floor, and a band course at the eaves. Elaborate consoled cornices and a die and baluster parapet, incorporating a central cartouche, complete the facade. The flanking bays are similarly detailed; the eastern one has a shallow, advanced central bay with a solid parapet supporting a tall, corniced scroll stack. The western one features a single-storey, corniced entrance porch with a cast-iron verandah supported on colonnettes. To the left, bipartite windows are similarly detailed.
The rear elevation is constructed from stugged ashlar, with single-light windows, many of which contain leaded coloured glass. A bow oriel with four round-headed lights is centrally positioned on the first floor. A single-storey, hipped-roofed billiard room has been added to the rear.
The interior is notably elaborate, featuring a hall with polychrome marbled Corinthian columns and an imperial staircase with carved timber turn newel posts and delicate cast-iron balusters. Decorative plaster cornices and ceiling work are consistent throughout. Most rooms have good panelling, along with rich door cases and window surrounds. There is also good leaded coloured glass.
To the east of the main building, a detached range of outbuildings in a classical style exists. These include a garage with pilastered reveals to the vehicle entrance and a bracketted pediment above. Adjacent to the garage is a two-bay dwelling with architraved, consoled, and corniced windows. A bipartite dormer breaks through the eaves. The building is finished with bracketted eaves and a hipped slate roof.
In front of the villa, ashlar balustrading defines the basement area, while a solid parapet lines the steps, ornamented with tall cast-iron lamp brackets. A low, coped ashlar wall encloses the garden. A flight of steps with a solid, coped ashlar parapet leads to Great Western Road from the carriageway. The garden behind the villa is terraced, featuring a flight of stone steps.
