Description
50 Cleveden Drive is a Gothic villa built around 1880, located in Kelvinside, Glasgow. The building features a double gabled frontage facing north and consists of two storeys, an attic, and a basement. It is constructed from coursed stugged ashlar with polished margins and bands above each floor.
To the left, there are steps leading up to a portico, which has a balustraded parapet and is adorned with crocketed capitals and a gabled porch. The entrance includes a pointed arch doorpiece with nook shafts and nailhead detailing, flanked by narrow lancet windows. The front door is an Art Nouveau design, made of oak with glazed panels. The windows are either pointed arch with hoodmoulds or square-headed and shouldered.
On the right side, there is a modestly proportioned three-light canted oriel window at ground level, which is corniced and features lancet lights. The west elevation has a single-storey canted window at ground level and a tripartite window on the first floor. The south elevation includes tripartite windows on the left and a canted three-light oriel on the right. The building has sash windows with plate glass glazing, and some upper sashes have coloured leaded glass. The gables are barge-boarded, and the villa has tall wallhead and axial stacks, topped with slate roofs.
Inside, the villa boasts good plasterwork with dog-tooth cornices, a pointed arch screen leading to the hall, and a staircase with crocketed capitals. There are elaborate door cases with square hoodmoulds, and the bow windows feature fine figurative Art Nouveau stained glass depicting Arthurian subjects, as well as stained glass in the stair light.
The property is enclosed by a low coped ashlar wall, complemented by a pair of tall corniced gatepiers leading to the garden.
