Description
1, 2 Devonshire Gardens in Glasgow is a terrace of five asymmetrical houses built around the 1870s. Each house features three bays and showcases classical architectural details. The buildings are two storeys high with attics and basements, constructed from polished ashlar, some of which are painted or have been stone cleaned.
The entrance to each house includes steps leading up to paired porches supported by Corinthian columns, topped with a balustraded parapet. The outer doors are double-leaf and panelled, while the vestibule doors are tripartite with glazed side lights and fanlights, many of which feature attractive leaded glass. Above the porch, there is a single light window with an architrave. Flanking the door are a five-light canted window and a projecting three-light rectangular window, both extending to full height. The houses have sash windows with plate glass glazing and deep overhanging timber modillion eaves.
Dormers are present, featuring four-light canted windows over canted windows, as well as one and two-light round-arched and pedimented windows. The roofs are covered with slate and have tall, corniced axial stacks with square flues that include dentil moulding. The end bays are topped with French pavilion roofs that have decorative brattishing.
The flanks of the terrace include a three-bay section with a two-storey four-light bow window on the right and a five-light canted window on the left, both of which have bow dormers above. Each house has a lower wing at the rear, and the rear elevations are finished in stugged ashlar. Number 4 features leaded small pane glazing in the lower sashes.
Surrounding the terrace are low coped droved ashlar walls, with tall square ashlar gatepiers marking the entrance to the carriageway.
