Description
10 Hyndland Road in Glasgow is a classical terrace building designed by H & D Barclay around 1883. It is two stories tall with attics and a basement, featuring a three-bay elevation for each house. The exterior is mostly painted polished ashlar.
The entrance is accessed by steps that oversail the basement, leading to an Ionic balustraded doorpiece. The double-leaf panelled doors open into an inner vestibule with tripartite doors that include glazed sidelights and a fanlight. On the ground floor, the left side has a 4-light canted window, while the right side features a 5-light square window, both topped with balustraded parapets. The first-floor windows are set in lugged architraves, with the outer windows being tripartite and the central window bipartite. All windows are sash with plate glass glazing.
A continuous dentil cornice runs above the ground floor, with a band course above the first-floor lintels and another dentil cornice at the eaves. The deep incised parapet is interrupted by bipartite dormers that have pediments, supporting console scrolls and akroteria. The building has corniced axial stacks and octagonal slate roofs.
Inside, the interiors are well-preserved, featuring coved plaster cornices in the drawing rooms, a Corinthian hall screen, finely carved timber door surrounds, and a glazed cupola above the staircase.
The steps have an ashlar parapet that is either pierced with quatrefoils or balustraded, and there is a low coped ashlar retaining or boundary wall along the street. At the rear of No 10, there is a mews cottage, No 1 Montague Lane, which is a two-story stugged ashlar cottage that has been stone cleaned. This cottage features a dormer window with an incised architrave and wide carriage entrances at ground level.
