Description
Western House is a large, two-storey Arts and Crafts villa constructed between 1919 and 1925 by Harold O Tarbolton. It is an asymmetrical design with nine bays. The exterior is finished in painted harl with brick detailing. The window openings feature a combination of transom and transom and mullion brick detailing.
The southwest elevation, which is the main entrance façade, has nine bays arranged in groups of three. An off-centre brick arched entrance features keystoned arches and recessed outer bays. A two-leaf entrance is located in the re-entrant angle to the left, with a tripartite catslide dormer aligned above. Bipartite windows are present at ground and first floor levels to the higher three-bay section on the right. Two single windows flank a high wallhead chimney to the advanced two bays on the outer right, and a single window is positioned at the corner angle at ground level, connecting to a bipartite window in the re-entrant angle. A bipartite window is at ground level, and a tripartite window at first floor level to the piended bay to the right of the three-bay section on the left. A quadripartite window sits in the gabled bay to the outer left, with a further quadripartite window at ground and first floor levels.
The southeast elevation, a ten-bay design arranged in groups of three, one, three, one, and two, has bipartite windows to the right and left of an advanced three-bay section on the left. A central French window with a balcony at first floor level is present, flanked by bipartite windows and single windows returning to the outer left and right. An advanced brick porch with a single bay features a bipartite window and a two-leaf entrance on the return to the right, with a small opening beneath a hipped gable. The ground floor has three sets of entrances with flanking sidelights and fanlights, while the first floor has three sets of quadripartite windows. An additional quadripartite window is present in the advanced bay to the left, with a single window to the right return. An advanced brick canted bay sits within the penultimate section to the right, with a single window above at first floor level and two tripartite windows at ground floor level. A single window is aligned above at first floor.
The northeast elevation shows two advanced wings with regular window placement. The windows are leaded. The roof is slate, with high brick wallhead stacks topped with circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present.
The interior includes a timber staircase with a first-floor gallery, panelled newel posts and a skylight with a pulvinated leaf frieze.
