Description
The Free Church Hall on George Street in Ayr dates back to 1832, with later additions. It is a two-storey, three-bay building with a nearly square plan and a pedimented classical design, featuring a church hall at the rear. The exterior is constructed of rubble, which has been painted on the entrance elevation, and it includes painted strip quoins. The entrance elevation has architraved openings, with a cornice at the ground floor.
On the north (entrance) elevation, there is a pilastered and pedimented double doorpiece with a pair of two-leaf timber doors. Above this, there is a single window aligned with the first floor. The pediment features a square panel dated 'AD 1832', and there are single windows flanking the outer bays at both the ground and first floors.
The east (John Street) elevation has two single windows at both the ground and first floors. The entrance elevation has blinded openings, while the side elevations feature plate glass timber sash and case windows. The south elevation has round-arched sash and case windows with gothick glazing flanking the pulpit. The roof is covered with grey slate and has stone skews.
Inside, the hall has a timber boarded ceiling, timber pews, a gallery, furniture, and a pulpit. A central domed finialled tester is present, along with flanking arched windows.
The church hall, which is asymmetrical in plan, is located to the south of the church. The property also includes gatepiers, gates, railings, and a boundary wall. There are central square-plan gatepiers at the main entrance, a single gatepier on the outer right, and a pair of gatepiers on the outer left, with iron gates and modern railings atop a coped boundary wall. An additional piend-roof section is located to the southeast.
