Description
St Margaret's Roman Catholic Church, located at 23 John Street in Ayr, was designed by James Dempster and completed in 1826, with transepts and a sanctuary added by D Sturrock in 1893. The church features a painted ashlar entrance elevation, while the sides and rear are constructed of rubble, with a base course.
The southwest entrance elevation includes a central roll-moulded arched entrance, topped with a crocketted ogee hoodmould that rises to a stylised finial, and has head label-stops. The entrance has a two-leaf timber door with a small-paned fanlight above it, and an arched three-light traceried window is positioned above, also featuring head label-stops to the hoodmould. Flanking the entrance are octagonal crenellated buttresses, with a pierced two-light parapet linking over the gable. The church has two-light arched aisle windows with head label-stops to the hoodmoulds above. Diagonal angle buttresses rise to finialled crocketted pinnacles, with crenellated raking links to the central bay.
Inside, the church contains timber pews, a gallery that houses the organ, and dado panelling. The sanctuary features a depiction of Christ on the Cross, flanked by stained glass windows, and the nave displays the Stations of the Cross. The side chapels have banded ceilings, and there are timber altars and reredos, with traceried roundel windows set within arches behind.
To the northeast of the church is a graveyard, which predominantly features headstone graves. The graveyard is enclosed by a coped boundary wall.
