Description

Govan Public Library, built between 1902 and 1903 by Sir John James Burnet, is an Edwardian baroque single-storey library featuring some sculptural details. The building has a serpentine front with a wide, shallow-curved portico supported by paired Tuscan columns, with doors located in a recessed area. Behind a balustrade, there is a diminutive roof dome. The outer bays are designed to resemble the ends of flanking ranges, with the rear elevation featuring pediments, each containing a canted bay and an oculus in the tympanum, along with three oculi in the wall area between the five-bay flanks. The library is constructed from stugged ashlar with polished dressings, channelled angle pilasters, deep entablatures, and roof balustrades adorned with sculptured urns. It has segmental-arched windows with original glazing and a combination of slated pitched and leaded flat roofs. The interior boasts deep mutule cornices, coffered ceilings, and segmental-vaulted ceilings. The property is enclosed by decorative iron railings.
