Description

Arthur's Warehouse, located at 81 Miller Street in Glasgow, was designed by Robert Black and James Salmon Senior and built between 1849 and 1850. This extensive three-storey building features a Renaissance style and has 15 bays arranged in a 6-3-6 pattern, with a particular emphasis on the central bays. The exterior is finished in painted ashlar, with a base course, a channelled ground floor, and a deep cornice.

On the ground floor, the central bays of each section are pilastered. There is a wide entrance to the close in the left bay of the central, slightly advanced section, which is now a columned window on the right. Above, both floors feature Venetian windows with segmental shell pediments over the central lights and flanking windows. The outer sections have paired semi-circular headed lights for the central windows at ground level, with two windows above that have apron balustrades and segmental shell pediments, which are simplified on the second floor. All remaining windows are adorned with panelled pilasters and cornices. The building is topped with a crowning balustraded and solid die parapet. Decorative cast-iron gates lead to the close, and the sash and case windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern.
