Description
485 St George's Road in Glasgow is a Greek temple-fronted church built between 1885 and 1886 by H and D Barclay. The building features a striking ashlar facade with a bold Ionic hexastyle frontispiece raised on a podium, which dominates the wide gable end. The pediment is adorned with sculpture by William Birnie Rhind. Access to the podium is provided by steps that rise either from the sides or via a wide main flight. The portico includes inner pilasters and attached columns that flank a central door, which is tall and corniced. The main gable head displays Thomsonesque details.
On the southeast elevation, the wide end bays feature small flat-headed windows with modern sympathetic glazing, and there is Greek key decoration between the floors. The building has a main cornice and a low parapet, with roof lights incorporated into the slate roof. There are no original interior features remaining, as the church was converted into housing in 1988-1989.
