Description
Woodside District Library, located at 343 St George's Road in Glasgow, was built between 1902 and 1905 by architect J R Rhind. This classical branch library is a single-storey structure featuring five central bays, with a prominent entrance bay at the south and a lower entrance at the north. The façade is made of ashlar stone.
The main entrance boasts an arched doorway beneath a full-height doorpiece supported by paired Ionic columns and a segmentally pedimented top. Above this entrance is a sculpture group depicting a woman reading to children.
Inside, the library hall features three arched windows that are flanked by Ionic columns, with paired outer columns rising from a cill course and supporting a balustraded entablature. Each flanking bay contains a corniced and architraved window with a decorative oculus above. The hall is crowned by a square domed cupola topped with a finial.
The secondary entrance is also architraved and has a decorative oculus above, supported by two putti. The interior includes a domed library hall with a coffered ceiling and four columned screens at either end.
