Description
Bridgeton Public Library, located at 23 Landressy Street in Glasgow, was designed by J R Rhind and built between 1903 and 1906. This Edwardian baroque building features stone-cleaned yellow ashlar with banding at the ground level, and its parapets conceal the roofs. The front of the library is curved to align with the street.
The main range is two stories high and includes pedimented outer pavilions, each with its own entrance. The first floor showcases the Ionic Order with a Venetian window arrangement and figurative sculpture in the tympanum. The intermediate bays are arcaded at the first floor, supported by Ionic pilasters. The former reading room has three tall round-headed lights, with sculptured detailing and a framed roundel at the central parapet.
Inside, the library retains much of its original woodwork, and there is a top-lit low rear range. The northern end of the building, which originally housed a reading room, is now occupied by a post office.
