Description
The shelter at Bridgeton Cross in Glasgow, built by George Smith & Co, Sun Foundry in 1874, is an important and prominent decagonal open structure made of cast iron. It features ornate decoration and is located at a large road junction. The shelter has a distinctive red fish scale tiled roof and a two-stage cupola that includes a clock.
The design includes an overhanging canopy with a cornice and fluted Corinthian columns. These columns are positioned between round-arched bays, which are adorned with decorative filigree iron-work in the spandrels and frieze. The structure has four bays, each with decorative brackets. Inside, there is a central column and decorative iron brackets supporting the roof. The two-stage cupola is topped with an ogee roof and a metal finial.
