Description

Bridgeton Cross Station in Glasgow, opened in 1872, is a two-storey classical former railway station featuring a seven-bay keystoned arcade at the ground level. It is flanked by four-storey tenement blocks built in 1897-1898 by T R Peacock of Thomson and Turnbull for the North British Railway, constructed from red sandstone ashlar.

The station has a base course and partial channelled ashlar at the ground level, with a moulded cill course at the first floor and a dentiled cornice topped with a blocking course. The tall ground floor showcases a seven-bay keystoned arched arcade at the centre, with a long ashlar panel above. The first-floor windows consist of plate glass set in timber sash windows. The outer pavilions are slightly advanced, featuring square moulded architraves around the doorways, round windows on the first floor, and segmental arched pediments with moulded swags above the cornice.

The tenements have long elevations with shops at the ground level, separated by moulded round-arched doorways. They feature projecting cills and cill courses for single or mullioned windows on the third and fourth floors, which are divided by narrow pilasters that rise as chimneys at the centre bays. The outer ends have steeply pitched pyramidal roofs adorned with decorative cast-iron finials. The rear includes raised drying courts with iron railings and small pavilion blocks.

The building predominantly features timber sash and case windows, broad narrow ridge stacks with some clay cans, and cast iron rainwater goods.
