Description
6 St George's Place in Glasgow is a tall tenement block built in the late 1830s by Alexander Taylor. It is the only remaining part of a circus that was planned in the 1830s and occupies an important corner site. The building has four storeys and features five bays on each side elevation, with a striking three-bay east elevation that includes a single-storey prow-like extension at the front, which is railed at the eaves level. The exterior is made of yellow ashlar sandstone, and it has a modern tiled roof.
The portico is situated on a podium created by the shop below and is supported by four giant, stylized Egyptian-esque columns, topped with an entablature and a balustrade. On the first and second floors, there are three windows flanked by pilasters at the outer angles, all of which are architraved. The outer windows on the first floor have cornices, while the central window features a pediment and pendants. The windows are modern casement reproductions of the original design, with lying panes. The attic opens onto a balcony, and above the cornice, there is a shallow block pediment flanked by fluted stacks and Egyptian-esque cans.
On the side elevations, the first and second floor windows are also architraved, with the first floor featuring aprons. The outer and central windows are pedimented, with the central window having pendants. There is a cill course on the second floor, and the attic windows are pilastered above the main cornice. The building has modern two-pane sash and case windows.
The ground floor includes timber shop fronts with a fascia and cornice, which is elaborated on the east side with a segmental pediment.
