Description

City Bakeries, located at 15 Clarendon Street in Glasgow, is a B-listed building designed by architect J M Biggar, with construction starting in 1924 and completed in 1929. The building was reconstructed and extended in 1936 by W J B Wright, with work taking place from 1936 to 1937. It underwent conversion in 1991. This six to seven-storey asymmetrical industrial structure is built from reinforced concrete, featuring red sandstone dressings and red brick cladding.

The design includes a narrow stair bay in the second-to-last southwest bay, flanked by pilasters that are corbelled from the first floor and rise above a pediment over an arched window. To the left, there is a plain outer bay with bipartite windows, while the three functionally detailed bays to the right are divided by plain masonry strips. The outer right bay features a segmental loading bay at ground level and a five-storey canted oriel above, which is supported by masonry piers and topped with a mannered crowning segmental pediment. The side elevations showcase prominently detailed stacks and decorative masonry panels.

The building has a variety of glazing, including small-pane sash windows, with lower sash plate-glass in the oriel. The extensive rear range reveals greater areas of exposed concrete in some blocks, and the building has a flat roof.
