Description
The Wheatsheaf Building, located at 52 Speirs Wharf in Port Dundas, Glasgow, was built in 1866 and converted by Windex in 1987. This five-storey warehouse, originally used for a sugar refinery, now serves as office space. The building features regularly squared and coursed sandstone on the main elevations, with squared and snecked stone at the rear. It has segmental arches over the windows and hoist doors, along with a base course and an eaves cornice.
On the south elevation, there are eight bays. A carriage door is situated in the bay to the right of the center, with a lower pedestrian door to the outer left. The remaining bays at ground level have tall narrow windows, while the upper levels feature regular fenestration with smaller windows.
The north elevation consists of three regularly fenestrated bays in the center and right, with a blank area on the outer right. A modern brick stair tower projects from the outer left.
The west elevation has three bays, with tall shop windows spanning the ground level. The upper levels show regular fenestration, including glazed hoist doors in the center bays and a platform for a modern attic hoist door.
The east elevation is adjacent to higher ground and has three bays. It features a door at ground level (first floor) and hoist doors above in the center bay. The left side has a blank bay, except for a blocked window on the top floor, while the outer right bay has blocked windows on each floor.
The building includes timber small-pane casement windows and has lead or zinc coping on the blocking course. The grey slate attic is fitted with Velux lights, and there is a setted forecourt with iron railings surrounding the complex to the south and east.
The interior was not seen in 1996.
