The Cooperage, 1-31 Commercial Wharf, Leith, Edinburgh

The Cooperage, located at 1-31 Commercial Wharf in Leith, Edinburgh, is an early 19th-century warehouse that was converted into flats between 1984 and 1985 by Gilmour & Stamp. This symmetrical building features five storeys and an attic, with a seven-bay façade constructed of cleaned cream sandstone and regular window arrangements.

On the southeast elevation, the central loading bay has a large multi-pane window at ground level, with openings above now fitted with large casement windows. Suspended platforms have been retained as balconies, and the gable supports a hoist mechanism. The central flanking bays also feature large multi-pane windows at ground level, and there are modern piend-roofed slate-hung dormers above each flanking bay. A cast-iron hoist is located to the left of the central bay at the first floor.

The southwest elevation consists of three bays with regular fenestration, including a single central window in the gablehead and an apex stack. The northeast elevation mirrors this design, with small closet windows added to the primary floors to the right of the central bay.

The northwest elevation features projecting harled stair and service towers flanking the center. It has three bays, with a modern timber-framed porch that includes an open gabled canopy spanning the right bays and tower at ground level. The center of this elevation has a broad tripartite window that was formerly used for cart access, along with skylights. The building displays course projecting quoins, eight-pane timber casement windows, grey slate roofing, and ashlar skews and stacks. Additionally, cast-iron chain-linked bollards are present along the waterfront.
