Description
The Leisure Centre at 10 Braid Square in Glasgow was designed by John Carrick and built between 1880 and 1882. This two-storey, 13-bay building features a rectangular plan and showcases Italian Renaissance architecture. It is located on a prominent corner site and was originally used as baths and a public washhouse. The exterior is made of cream-colored sandstone ashlar and includes channeled rusticated arcaded bays leading to a break-fronted entrance with a pediment. The building has a deep base course, a corniced cill course, and corniced eaves with a blocking course. The openings are moulded and architraved, with widely spaced bays in the flanking wings—three bays on the left and seven on the right—along with large oculi positioned above the ground floor windows. The four-bay returns display a similar pattern of fenestration. There are modern extensions at the rear of the building.
The windows are predominantly non-traditional replacements, and the roof is pitched with slate, featuring glazed rooflights over the original pool area to the south.
Inside, much of the interior was reconstructed between 1989 and 1991, but the timber roof and columned gallery have been retained.
