Description
The Calton Police Building, located at 92 Tobago Street in Glasgow, was designed by John Carrick and constructed between 1868 and 1869. This former court and police station is a two-storey, seven-bay structure featuring classical detailing. The exterior is made of ashlar stone with polished dressings, a channelled ground floor, and quoins.
The central entrance is highlighted by architraves and panelled pilaster strips that support a console-corniced doorpiece. The ground floor windows are adorned with voussoired lintels, and there is a band course that runs above both the ground and first floors. The first-floor windows are also architraved and corniced, complete with aprons. A deeply projecting cornice and a blocking course add to the building's architectural interest.
At the rear, there are brick ranges that may have been added later, featuring barred cell windows and a decorative stack.
Inside, the court room boasts an elaborately plastered coved ceiling, embellished with three-dimensional rosettes and a very elaborate ventilator rose.
