Description

Tureen Street School, located at 35 Tureen Street in Glasgow, consists of three school blocks made of stone-cleaned yellow ashlar. All blocks were renovated in 1974. The northern block, designed by John Honeyman, was built between 1875 and 1876 and features a datestone from 1875. It is three storeys high with a symmetrical five-bay front, where the entrances are located in recessed ranges on either side. The ground floor has channelled stone with segmental-arched openings, while the upper floors have architraved windows with consoled hoods on the first floor and a central segmental pediment. The block is also adorned with horizontal bands and a cornice.

The central block, designed by J J Craig and constructed between 1884 and 1886, is a slightly simplified version of Honeyman's design. It is two storeys tall with a later attic storey above the main entablature, and the outer windows are linked by a parapet.

The southern block, designed by J L Cowan in 1902, is situated at the corner with Millroad Street. This block is two storeys high and features a deep wall area between the floors, with blocked architraves on the ground floor. The upper windows are unmargined and set between a cill band and a deep entablature facing Millroad Street. The end wall facing Tureen Street includes a Diocletian window at the first floor beneath a gabled head.

The glazing throughout the school is mostly original, and the building has slate roofs with rooflights. Low walls with gatepiers connect the blocks. Additionally, there is a janitor's lodge at the northern end, which has a gable facing the street and is compact in plan, featuring a datestone from 1891.
