Meat Market Facade, Cattle Market, Bellgrove Street, Glasgow

The Cattle Market on Bellgrove Street in Glasgow was primarily designed by John Carrick, the City architect, between 1866 and 1875, with some ranges constructed around 1910 by AB MacDonald, the City Engineer. There are elements that may be older, and there are post-war additions within the site. This large complex included cattle and dead meat markets and associated buildings, most of which have been demolished, but the main entrance facades have been preserved.

At the northeast, there is a covered open area, which is currently used as a car market, mostly built in 1866. It features four roof pitches, possibly designed as a nave-and-aisles arrangement, with the roof span second from the south being the widest. The northern range appears to be of a different date. The structure includes cast iron columns, iron and steel roof framing, and is covered with slate and glazing.

The main gateway leading into this area, which marks the northern end of Graham Square, features a large columned central gateway with flanking pedestrian openings. This gateway is made of cleaned ashlar with channelling. On the west side of Graham Square, there is the retained painted ashlar facade of the Meat Market, built around 1875, which is classical in style and includes two colossal frames for a round-arched gateway. A parapet that once concealed the roof has been removed. Another gateway of similar design and scale spans Moore Street to the west, while a smaller heavily rusticated gateway is located on the channelled ashlar boundary wall along Bellgrove Street.

Fronting Melbourne Street, originally Hill Street, there is a long stretch of painted ashlar channelled wall that ends at the last surviving building, a single-storey structure made of similar material with an attic, which may not be original. This area features a gateway with two massive piers and wrought iron gates that bear the city crest, much of which was designed by MacDonald. The remaining building is now used by Intercity Motor Auctions.
