Description
The Dalry Public Baths, located at 29 Caledonian Crescent, Edinburgh, were designed by Robert Morham and built in 1893, with a refurbishment carried out in 1992. They are an Italianate villa-style public baths building, comprising seven bays arranged symmetrically, with an eighth bay serving as the machinery entrance on the outer right. The main block is two storeys with three bays, featuring a Tuscan portico and flanking single-storey, two-bay wings. Behind this are the pool and changing areas. The building is constructed from coursed pink sandstone with some ashlar dressings. Windows have moulded cills.
The north (entrance) elevation features a base course. A Doric distyle portico is centrally located, with the inscription "DALRY PUBLIC BATHS" carved into the frieze. This portico contains a two-leaf door with a multi-pane semi-circular fanlight, deeply set within a moulded surround. Round-headed ground floor windows flank the centre and extend to the pavilion bays, with chamfered arrises. A moulded impost course is present at window level, with the window immediately left of the entrance converted to a doorway to provide ramped access. Wings have a cornice and parapet with dies. A band course divides the floors of the central block, and there are three round-headed bipartite windows on the first floor, featuring moulded ashlar arches and transoms. A moulded band course is present at the springing level, returning on the side elevations to a first oculus. A dentilled cornice is located at the eaves.
The outer right bay is slightly recessed and lower, with a full-width semi-circular arch that encloses a two-leaf garage door. Above, paired round-headed windows have moulded ashlar dressings, with a cill course and cornice continuing from the main elevation; there is no parapet to this section.
The east and west elevations of the central block continue the cornice and incorporate oculi flanking the ridge of the wings.
Throughout the building, multi-pane timber casement windows are fitted with round-arched top-hoppers. The roof is piend with a platform and is covered in grey slates. There are corniced ashlar wallhead stacks with octagonal cans to the two-storey block. Cast-iron downpipes and moulded eaves gutters are also present.
A low wall with saddleback coping and railings is situated at the front, with the wall raised to accommodate a ramped access to the left of the main entrance.
Internally, the entrance hall and stair are arcaded and tiled. The baths to the rear are galleried with some arcading. These areas were altered in 1992 to incorporate changing facilities, now lit by an open timber A-frame roof and supported by cast-iron columns alongside the galleries. The reception area was also enlarged in 1992.
