Description
1 Caledonian Road in Edinburgh is a Baronial tenement built around 1878 and restored in 1983. This five-bay building is symmetrical and faces a green area northwest of the Congregational Church, adjacent to its hall. The exterior features harled walls with red sandstone ashlar margins, a cill course at the first floor, and crowsteps. The central bay is blank, with a door at the ground level that has a rectangular fanlight above it, and a crow-stepped gablehead stack. The inner bays are positioned close to the re-entrant angle formed with the slightly advanced outer bays. Each outer bay has bipartite windows on every floor, rounded corners that transition to square below the eaves, a corbelled cill course at the second floor, and bracketed cills at the third floor, all topped with crow-stepped gables. There is a single bay return to the southwest, featuring a crow-stepped gablehead stack and adjoining No 3 Caledonian Crescent.
The building has timber sash and case windows with four-pane glazing and is covered with grey slates. The interior was unseen in 1992, but it is noted that the flats are larger than usual, with only two per floor; one flat, in particular, features decorated plaster ceilings and cornice work. The front of the building is complemented by plain iron railings.
