Description

Dundas Vale School, located at 38 New City Road in Glasgow, was designed by D and J Hamilton and completed in 1837. This building features a Classical Renaissance style and is arranged in a V-plan on a two-storey structure with an attic in the central block. The main elevation consists of 11 x 10 bays, arranged in a 3-5-3 pattern, with returns of 2-6-2. The exterior is finished in droved ashlar with polished ashlar dressings and a rusticated plinth. It has sash and case windows with glazing bars.

The elevation facing New City Road showcases a central block with a double paired pilastered and pillared portico, which extends in flat single bays to the east and west. This portico is topped with a mutule cornice and an open die parapet. The entrance features a round-headed door with a scroll keyblock, a panelled timber door, and a fanlight with glazing bars. The windows on both floors are round-headed with scroll keyblocks, and there is a console bracketed cornice above. The roof is piended and covered with slate, featuring regular round-headed dormers. Atop the building is a single-stage bell tower with Doric pilastered aedicule louvres on each side, clock faces, and an urn finial.

The wings of the school are marked by plain giant pilasters that divide the bays. The ground floor windows are keyblocked, while the first-floor windows are scroll keyblocked. The eaves feature a cornice, and the roof is piended.

The east and west return elevations have outer bays set in pilaster strips, with keyblocked arched windows on the ground floor and console keyblocked aprons on the first floor. The central bays have plain windows with aprons at the ground floor and corbelled cills at the first floor. These elevations also include an eaves cornice and a parapet.

Inside, the school boasts coved ceilings supported by cast-iron columns, as well as coffered ceilings in the ground floor classrooms. The property is enclosed by a coped ashlar boundary wall that features pedimented entrances in the outer sections, coupled cast-iron pierced piers in the center, and cast-iron railings.
