Description
The Skene Street Congregational Church is a later 19th century church with a temple-fronted rectangular plan, located on a corner site in Aberdeen. Its architectural style shows the influence of Alexander Thomson and "Thomsonesque" buildings found in the west. The church is constructed of granite, with a temple front facing Skene Street and a rock-faced podium. It features giant Ionic pilasters that support the main entablature, along with pilaster-mullioned 2-light windows arranged in two tiers behind the giant order. There are shallow-recessed porches on either side, tall windows on the flanks, and a deep frieze facing Esslemont Avenue, complemented by an iron-railed boundary with the street. A vestry door also opens onto Esslemont Avenue, and there is a tall apse at the rear. The building is topped with a slate roof.
