Description

The Janitor's House, dating to 1904 and designed by A Lindsay Miller, is a simple example of a Free Renaissance style School Board School. It originally served Haghill Public School in Glasgow and is now located at 2 Marwick Street, having been refurbished as part of a housing development following the demolition of the main school building.

The building is constructed of red sandstone ashlar, with a rusticated base course, double cill courses to the first floor, and a cill course to the second floor. An eaves cornice and parapet top the structure, which is covered by a slate roof. The principal (south-facing, originally Walter Street) elevation features an off-centre, four-bay pedimented gable with the initials "GBS" in the gable apex. A 1904 datestone is positioned at ground floor level. Friezes reading "Haghill Public School" and "School Board of Glasgow" adorn the facades between the first and second floors, and the second and third floors, respectively. The elevation is arranged with four bays to the right and five bays to the left.

The north-facing (Marwick Street) elevation has a central, advanced three-bay pedimented gable containing "GBS" in the gable apex. Identical friezes featuring “Haghill Public School” and the “School Board of Glasgow” are present. The elevation is composed of one bay to the left and three bays to the right.

The west elevation presents a flat-roofed entrance archway with two stories recessed above. To the right is a three-bay pedimented gable, while to the left is a bowed frontage extending over six bays, punctuated by an advanced two-story entrance bay. A later single-story red sandstone addition obscures the original arched entrance. A similar arrangement is found on the east elevation, featuring a flat-roofed entrance archway, a one-bay pedimented gable to the left, bowed frontage repeating the six bays, and an advanced two-story entrance bay. A later single-story red sandstone addition obscures the original entrance.

The windows predominantly feature timber, four-pane sash and case designs with top hoppers. The building has plain, tall chimney stacks located to the west and east. A plenum heating and ventilation system chimney projects from the south elevation.

The interior retains good original features, including classrooms arranged around a central hall. Noteworthy is the hammer-beam roof supported by steel ties, long roof lights, decorative ventilators, and decorative cast iron radiators in the ground floor hall. Dado-height tiling, incorporating egg and dart detail, is found throughout the hall and corridors.

Original gate piers and boundary walls enclose the site. A high wall of squared and snecked red sandstone with a base course and corniced coping runs to the southwest. Lower squared and snecked stone walls with simple steel railings border the north, south, and east boundaries. Decorative square gate piers, topped with curved coping, mark the entrances; one to Marwick Street and two to Walter Street. These piers are inscribed with "BOYS", "GIRLS", and "INFANTS".

The Janitor's House itself is a single-story and attic red sandstone ashlar building with mullioned windows. Its east-facing principal elevation features a central entrance door flanked by a one-bay gable to the left and a one-bay gable to the right, both with pedimented dormers. Grey slates cover the roof, with stacks positioned to the north and south, and a taller stack at the southwest corner.
