Description

A Lindsay Miller, dated 1904. Three-storey and basement, irregular plan, simple Free Renaissance School Board School. Red sandstone ashlar. Rusticated base course, first floor double cill course, second floor cill course, eaves cornice and parapet. Slate roof.

(School demolished, Janitor's House extant, now 2 Marwick Street, being refurbished as part of housing development – information received December 2025).

South (Walter Street) (Principal) Elevation: off centre four-bay pedimented gable with GBS in gable apex. 1904 datestone at ground floor. "Haghill Public School” frieze between first and second floor, "School Board of Glasgow” frieze between second and third floor. Four bays to right, Five bays to left.

North (Marwick Street) Elevation: central advanced three-bay pedimented gable with GBS in gable apex. "Haghill Public School” frieze between first and second floor, "School Board of Glasgow” frieze between second and third floor. One bay to left, three bays to right.

West Elevation: flat-roofed entrance archway with two storeys recessed above, three-bay pedimented gable to right, four bays bowed to left with advanced single bay two-storey entrance. Later single storey red sandstone addition obscures arched entrance.

East Elevation: flat-roofed entrance archway with two storeys recessed above, One-bay pedimented gable to left, six bays bowed to right with advanced single bay two-storey entrance. Later single storey red sandstone addition obscures entrances.

Varied glazing pattern, mostly timber four pane sash and case with top hoppers. Plain tall stacks to west and east. Plenum heating and ventilation system chimney to south.

Interior: good interior with classrooms set around central hall.Hammer-beam roof with steel ties, long roof lights and decorative ventilators. Decorative cast iron radiators to ground floor hall. Dado height tiling throughout hall and corridors with egg and dart detail.

Gate piers and boundary walls: high squared and snecked red sandstone wall with base course and corniced coping to southwest, low squared and snecked stone wall to north, south and east with simple steel railings. Decorative square gate piers with curved coping, one to Marwick Street, two to Walter Street, inscribed BOYS, GIRLS and INFANTS.

Janitor's House (2 Marwick Street): single storey and attic, three-bay red sandstone ashlar janitor's house, mullioned windows. Principal (East) Elevation: central entrance door flanked by two storey one bay gable to left and one bay to right with pedimented dormer. Grey slates, stacks to north and south with tall stack at southwest.
