Description
The Grange School, dating from 1906 with a later 20th-century addition to the east, is a two- and three-storey primary school built in a Free Renaissance style incorporating Art Nouveau details. The building is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone rubble, with a base course, and features stone mullioned and transomed windows with segmental, pedimented, and pitched gableheads. A decorative fleche rises from the west elevation.
The west (entrance) elevation is two storeys with four bays, displaying stepped ashlar lettering reading 'GRANGE BO'NESS AND CARRIDEN SCHOOL BOARD SCHOOL' between the ground and first floors. The two inner bays have pedimented gableheads, while the outer bays have segmental ones. A mirrored three-storey stair tower, also dated 1906, and a single-storey doorpiece with a round-arched opening displaying 'BOYS' and 'GIRLS' are set forward.
The south elevation mirrors the west elevation, except that the west elevation has a deep basement to accommodate the site's slope. The south elevation is eight bays wide with a three-storey, flat-roofed stair tower to the far left, featuring tripartite windows. Regular bays with pitched gableheads, featuring half-timbering detail at the apex of bays three, five, and seven, are situated to the right. A late 20th-century concrete addition is located at the far right.
The building largely features modern glazing and a modern red tile roof, with cast-iron rainwater goods and hoppers. The decorative ridge fleche is a notable feature of the west elevation.
The interior is characterised by a well-considered plan and decorative scheme arranged around a top-lit central hall. The roof structure utilizes cast-iron trusses springing from stone corbels. The first floor is accessed via a cast-iron railing and timber staircase. Cream and black tiled stairwells and timber staircases are present. Original timber dado panelling, timber doors with glazed upper panels and glazed fanlights, and glazed screens with sliding panels between classrooms remain. Didactic cabinets, donated in the contemporary period by British companies such as James Coats of Paisley, Nobel's Explosives Company Ltd, Glasgow, and pencil makers L & C Hardtmuth, are fixed in the stairwells and on the first floor, showcasing company wares and teaching aids.
The original site is enclosed by a high rubble boundary wall with flat coping to the south. To the west and north, the wall is stepped with gabled coping and railings. Pairs of simple square gatepiers, topped with flat caps inscribed 'GIRLS' to the west and 'BOYS' to the north, mark the entrances. A further square pier is located to the northwest.
