Description

This is a two-storey, L-shaped villa built in 1907, designed by Andrew Mickel and influenced by the Art Nouveau style. It is situated on Grahamsdyke Road and includes associated gatepiers and boundary walls. The exterior is predominantly harled with some red sandstone ashlar margins. Distinctive features include a first-floor timber conservatory/verandah and a viewing tower.

The principal, south elevation features a two-bay section with a pitched roof. A tripartite canted bay window is located on the right-hand side at ground level, and a bipartite window to the left. Above these are a pair of bipartite windows. A recessed single bay to the far left holds a round-arched, keystoned entrance, with a timber conservatory/verandah above.

The north elevation incorporates a single-storey, basement projecting wing with a piend roof. A centrally positioned, round-arched stained glass stair window is visible, and to the right is an engaged tower with a tripartite window on the ground floor and a timber viewing platform on the first floor.

The windows are largely original timber sash and case windows with horns, and typically feature three vertical panes over plate glass or two panes. The roof is covered in grey slates, and decorative cast-iron rainwater goods are present, with a hopper on the south elevation.

The interior is exceptionally well-preserved and displays a strong Art Nouveau/Glasgow influence. It is characterised by predominantly six-panel oak doors. The entrance leads to a timber-panelled hallway with dentil detail. A bay windowed room on the south elevation (originally the dining room) has continuous mid-height oak panelling with a display recess incorporating shelves and narrow cupboards with upper stained glass panels, along with a simple stylised cornice and banded ceiling. A ground floor tower room (former parlour) has timber panelling including a bookcase, shelves with doors featuring glazed upper panels and a simple timber chimneypiece. The kitchen has timber panelling with a built-in dresser featuring sliding doors, a small range, and access to a washhouse and lavatory within the rear wing. The staircase also features timber panelling and a stained glass window depicting a shield. A former drawing room on the first floor retains parquet flooring, a dentilled picture rail, and a simple cornice. The fireplace is tiled in cream and green, decorated with sailing boats, and has a large timber overmantle with leaded pane display cupboards, flanked by stained glass panels and engaged timber seats with a cut-out heart motif. Original fireplaces are found in the other bedrooms. The bathroom retains original features including a towel rail, wash-hand basin and spray bath with shower.

To the south, a low harled and coped stepped boundary wall is punctuated by two pairs of square corniced gatepiers with shallow pyramidal caps, although the gatepier on the outer left is a replacement.
