Description
2-20 Paisley Road West in Glasgow is a building designed by Bruce and Hay around 1885. It is a three-storey and attic structure featuring a five-by-three-by-five-by-eight-bay gusset ashlar Renaissance block. The ground floor has been altered.
The building has a three-bay frontage with a string course and a broken pediment. An arched window extends through the first and second floors, flanked by bipartite windows with scroll motifs on the first floor. There is a main cornice and a central blind dormer set in a Dutch Renaissance gable, which includes two niches and is flanked by two tall corner towers that are slate-hung and have consoled Dutch dormers. The southern tower features a pedimented intermediate detail, a wooden bellcote, and a winged angel.
On the Govan Road elevation, there are five bays of large bipartite windows with pilaster mullions on the first and second floors. The first floor has banded masonry dividing the windows, while the second floor features paired pilasters. The elevation also includes a cornice, parapet, slate roof, and two tall pyramid roofs at angles, one of which has a dormer. The Paisley Road West elevation is similar but has pediments with carved tympana over the first floor and dormers in both pyramid roofs. The rear of the building is constructed of rubble and has three bays, with paired and tripartite windows and two stacks.
