Description
Scotland Street Public School, located at 225 Scotland Street in Glasgow, was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and built between 1903 and 1907.
The building is constructed from red ashlar sandstone and features a three-storey, seven-bay principal (north) elevation with a small central entrance for infants. This entrance is flanked by two prominent glazed staircase towers, which serve the boys' and girls' entrances, and are adorned with mullioned windows containing small panes and topped with conical slate roofs. The cloakrooms on either side are set in receding stages and supported by buttresses. The end elevations are asymmetrical and feature tall chimneystacks, while there is an archway leading to the east boundary wall topped with a bell cupola.
The rear (south) elevation is three-storey and consists of 18 bays with a more austere design, featuring stylised architrave and swag decorations on the end and central bays, along with metal framed windows and a slate roof. The interior includes a simply tiled corridor layout.
At the northwest corner of the site, there is a two-storey janitor's house with an oriel window, swept roofs, and chimney stacks. The original scheme also included a boundary wall with gates and railings, featuring a shallow arched ashlar entrance and an outside toilet block. The school was closed due to the demolition of the surrounding housing but reopened as a museum of education in November 1990.
