Description

This is a late 19th century tenement building located on Paisley Road West in Kinning Park, Glasgow. It is a substantial, four-storey building, originally four bays wide and fifteen bays long, with a shop and bank situated at the corner. The building is constructed from cream sandstone ashlar, with a base course. Channelled masonry is employed at ground level on the Stanley Street frontage of Nos 7-11. The corner bank features polished granite, a glazed pilastrade, a deep fascia, a unifying cornice, and a curved panel at the corner angle. Raised margins are present to the windows above ground floor level, along with cornices to the first and second floors. A wallhead cornice and blocking course includes moulded guttering.

The north-facing elevation, along Paisley Road West, is four bays wide. The main entrance to the bank is located in the bay to the left of centre, featuring a columned doorpiece constructed from polished pink granite columns and a bracketed balustraded stone window guard to the first-floor window, flanked by panelled dies and ball finials; a modern door now occupies the space. A tripartite pilastrade is positioned to the right, with a door and window located to the shop on the outer left. An ornate heraldic corner piece is situated above the bank front at first floor, depicting a lion and unicorn flanking a shield, with painted and gilded detailing. The fenestration above ground floor is regular throughout the elevation.

The west-facing elevation, along Stanley Street, is comprised of fifteen bays. The six bays to the left are slightly advanced, incorporating a seven-part pilastraded bank with a door located on the outer right. Above, blind windows are present on each floor of the wider, outer left bay, with the remaining bays exhibiting regular fenestration. The remaining nine bays belong to the tenement itself, with doors in the third, fifth and seventh bays, and regular fenestration to the floors above.

Predominantly, eight-pane timber sash and case windows are featured throughout the tenement, with some interspersed plate glass sash and case windows and modern tilt and turn windows above the bank at first floor. Wallhead truncated ashlar stacks and brick stacks are present on the mutual gables.

The interior of the bank is of good classical design, featuring a panelled timber counter with carved lion brackets, and panelled wainscot with a pulvinated frieze and cornice, surmounted by a swan-neck pediment over the door to the washroom. Columns with Corinthian capitals are positioned at intervals. A fine classical timber clock case, complete with pilasters supporting a segmental cornice, is situated to the rear of the bank office, positioned above the wainscot. The ceiling is compartmentalised, incorporating decorative plasterwork and a modillioned cornice.
