Description

The Harbour Tunnel in Glasgow features a rotunda designed by engineers Simpson and Wilson in 1888, with construction carried out by Alex Finlay and Co from 1890 to 1895. This rotunda is one of two built over the shafts that provide access to two vehicular tunnels and one pedestrian tunnel under the River Clyde. It has a diameter of 80 feet and consists of 16 bays, constructed from brick with stone cornices and cills. The arched windows are separated by brick pilasters that support a stone cornice and a brick parapet.

The vehicle entrance is marked by five cast-iron Corinthian columns that support steel girders. There are two arched pedestrian entrances that lead down timber stairs on steel girders to a five-bay timber pilastered ticket office and into the tunnel. A steel girder crosspiece spans the lift shaft, which is 72 feet deep and contains two vehicle tunnels, each 16 feet in diameter, at its base. The rotunda is topped with a steel-framed dome, featuring a slate and glazed roof.
