Description
The South Rotunda at Mavisbank Quay in Glasgow is a significant structure designed by engineers Simpson and Wilson in 1888, with construction carried out by Alex Finlay and Co. from 1890 to 1895. This rotunda is one of two built over shafts that provide access to two vehicular tunnels and one pedestrian tunnel under the River Clyde.
The rotunda features a 16-bay design with an 80-foot diameter shaft, constructed from brick and adorned with stone cornices and cills. It has arched windows that are separated by brick pilasters, which support a stone cornice and a brick parapet.
The vehicle entrance is marked by five cast-iron Corinthian columns that support steel girders. There are also two arched pedestrian entrances on the north side, which lead down timber stairs on steel girders to a five-bay timber pilastered ticket office and into the tunnel. A steel girder crosspiece spans the lift shaft, which is 72 feet deep and has two 16-foot diameter vehicle tunnels at its base.
The rotunda is topped with a steel-framed dome and has a roof made of slate and glazed materials. To the west of the rotunda, there is a one-storey brick building that features an arched door leading to a now-demolished annexe, a large arch to the north, two arched windows, and one arched door to the east. The interior of this building is finished with white enamel brick, and it has a slate roof with a ridge ventilator.
