Description

The Kingston Engine Works, located at 71 Milnpark Street in Glasgow, was founded in 1866 and rebuilt in 1873. This building is a three-storey block measuring 19 by 4 bays, constructed of red brick with yellow brick window margins and cornice, featuring ashlar rusticated quoins and cills. It has ornate tie-plates and a large basket-arched door on Milnpark Street, which has rusticated dressings and a keystone but is now partly blocked. The ground floor has an arched door and all but eight windows are blocked. The first floor contains arched windows with iron frames and fanlights, with nine southern windows being hinged and ten northern windows fixed, all of which are original. The third floor features timber-framed windows. The building has a dentil cornice and a corrugated roof.

Inside, the nine southern bays are three-storey, supported by iron cylindrical columns. The ten northern bays front a two-storey ground floor buttressed erecting shop, which includes an in-situ travelling crane and a tall brick open arcade.

On Milnpark Street, there are lower three-storey offices that are four by four bays, made of red and yellow brick with iron-framed windows on the ground and second floors. The offices feature an aedicule pedimented doorway, ashlar quoins, a dentil cornice, and two polychrome wallhead stacks, topped with a slate roof. An oriel at the rear faces into the corrugated fitting shop.
