Description

The Engineering Works at 8-14 Scotland Street in Glasgow consists of two sections built between 1864 and 1871. The first section, constructed in 1864-1865, is a two-storey, eleven-bay block made of ashlar stone. The ground floor features segmental arched windows and a large basket arched cartway with bold voussoirs, along with a string course. The first floor has arched windows with a 13-pane glazing pattern, although two windows above the door have been blocked. There is a tie plate at the eaves level, and the building is topped with a slate roof.

Inside, the layout is a high single-storey L-plan. The interior of the L once opened to a yard and includes two tall cylindrical cast-iron columns that had mountings for jib cranes, which have since been removed. The three western bays were originally two-storey, with the upper floor serving as a panelled office. The roof features a kingpost timber structure.

The second section, built between 1870 and 1871, is a two-storey office building with a four-by-six bay layout. The front is made of ashlar stone, with the ground floor channelled and continuing across the quoins. It has a basket arched door and sash and case windows with roll moulded arrises. There is a cornice over the ground quoins, and the first floor has four basket arched windows. The building features an eaves cornice and a wallhead stack. The elevation facing Paterson Street has six bays and is made of brick, now harled except for yellow brick margins, with one window converted into a door. It also has a dentil cornice and includes both ground and first floors, topped with a slate roof and a corrugated rear.

Inside this section, there are panelled window reveals, a plaster cornice, and a ceiling rose. The ground floor is now part of a warehouse, while the upstairs has been converted into a flat.
